The Owego Fire Department’s (OFD) Emergency Support Services (ESS) group has played a key role in the community since 2007.
The group’s mission, “To act as a support system in areas that will benefit the department and the Owego community at large,” encompasses several levels and their role is a significant asset that makes a difference for many in the community.
Five different companies within OFD are supported by ESS, and where the group’s efforts promote the physical and well-being of the OFD family. They respond to incidents any time of the day or night when toned out or requested by the Fire Chief, to provide food and beverages to firefighters, EMS and fire police.
In addition, they organize and provide refreshment services at department functions like department elections, educational classes, fire prevention or banquets, and picnics; as well as community functions like Red Cross Blood Drives. They support the OFD membership with fundraising activities.
OFD-ESS remains open to anyone interested in joining the group. As active OFD members, ESS volunteers are required to complete OSHA and other necessary training. ESS Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month September through June.
